Lecithin and Phosphatidylcholine
Also sold as: Phosphatidylcholine · Soy lecithin · Sunflower lecithin
Lecithin is a mixture of phospholipids containing phosphatidylcholine, a source of choline. Nutritional choline supply is distinct from claims of sharper memory, lower LDL or treatment of liver disease.

Research
- Focus: A Cochrane review of12 trials found no consistent benefit in dementia or cognitive impairment; healthy-adult focus enhancement is unestablished.
REALITY CHECK // The memory-booster claim is not supported consistently by dementia trials, and this dossier has no convincing human lecithin RCT for LDL reduction. UC evidence concerns delayed-release PC and liver findings concern multi-ingredient preparations. A rise in plasma choline is a biomarker, not proof of better endurance.
Levels: how we grade evidence. Grey = evidence of no benefit; amber = evidence it makes this goal worse.
Ratings are self-reported by a self-selected group of users: how it felt, not proof that it works.

How it was studied
UPPER LIMIT // No established lecithin UL is provided. The US adult3500 mg/day UL applies to CHOLINE, not lecithin or phosphatidylcholine mass; EFSA did not establish a choline UL in the cited2016 assessment. No comparable numeric gate is applied to the lecithin calculator.
Summary
Lecithin is not an established dementia treatment. Delayed-release phosphatidylcholine has a limited ulcerative-colitis signal specific to that preparation, while liver studies used combinations that do not isolate its contribution.
Mechanism
Phosphatidylcholine is a membrane phospholipid and choline source. Microbial choline metabolism can generate TMA and TMAO, but associated cardiovascular risk does not establish harm from every lecithin supplement.
Typical studied dose
No validated universal lecithin dose for memory or LDL emerges from the dossier. Lactation expert practice describes1200 mg3–4 times daily, without RCT confirmation; this is not a prescription. UC and liver preparations are formulation-specific.

Forms and label traps
| Form on label | Active content | Studied range / day | Absorption & GI tolerance | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soy lecithin mixture Best for: Check soy allergy and an actual PC/choline assay. |
Unstandardized: active content unknown | no comparable trial range | Can increase plasma choline; phospholipid composition varies. Digestive tolerance varies; stop for persistent symptoms. |
Caution [FORM // NO_VALIDATED_RANGE] Raw lecithin may contain about20–25% PC and PC about13% choline; these rough values are not a verified product-specific choline conversion. |
| Sunflower lecithin mixture Best for: Source choice for people avoiding soy. |
Unstandardized: active content unknown | no comparable trial range | No reliable human head-to-head superiority established. Digestive tolerance varies; stop for persistent symptoms. |
Caution [FORM // NO_VALIDATED_RANGE] No established cognitive or LDL trial interval; do not treat100% lecithin mass as100% choline. |
| Purified phosphatidylcholine / PPC Best for: Match assay, release system and study formulation. |
Unstandardized: active content unknown | no comparable trial range | Higher PC concentration than raw lecithin; clinical findings are combination-dependent. Digestive tolerance varies; stop for persistent symptoms. |
Caution [FORM // NO_VALIDATED_RANGE] No pooled dose target imported from multi-ingredient liver trials. Delayed-release UC products are not interchangeable with ordinary softgels. |
Common label traps
- TRAP_01 // LECITHIN CLEANS ARTERIES
This dossier does not establish a human supplement RCT benefit for LDL; LCAT drug research and animal studies are different. - TRAP_02 // LECITHIN IS ALPHA-GPC
Alpha-GPC and citicoline are different compounds; their evidence cannot be transferred. - TRAP_03 // PROVEN MILK-DUCT TREATMENT
The familiar lactation use is expert practice without confirmatory RCTs. - TRAP_04 // 1200 MG LECITHIN IS1200 MG CHOLINE
PC is only part of a lecithin mixture and choline only part of PC; use measured label content.

- ULCERATIVE COLITIS Limited · benefit
Delayed-release PC meta-analyses suggest response/remission, but evidence clusters around one research group and later phase3 findings are mixed; ordinary lecithin is not the same intervention.
PMID 33440385 PMID 35831742 PMID 28503977 - FATTY LIVER Limited · benefit
Silybin+PC+vitamin E and PPC+liraglutide combinations improved some parameters; the independent PC effect is not identified.
PMID 22343419 PMID 38814610 - LDL CHOLESTEROL No established evidence
Human lecithin supplementation benefit remains unestablished in this dossier; a compositional/mechanistic review is not a positive clinical trial.
PMID 31786232 - TARDIVE DYSKINESIA Limited · no benefit
Cochrane cholinergic-drug reviews do not provide convincing lecithin/choline efficacy.
PMID 29553158 PMID 12137608 - PLASMA CHOLINE / ENDURANCE Limited · benefit
A marathon trial increased or maintained plasma choline; improved race performance was not demonstrated.
PMID 11194530 - PLUGGED MILK DUCTS Anecdotal · benefit
Expert lactation practice describes use, but no supporting RCT is supplied.
PMID 16419666 - PREGNANCY NUTRITION Limited · benefit
Choline matters nutritionally during pregnancy/lactation, but nutrient-level evidence does not establish lecithin product efficacy or an individual dose.

Reader questions
How much choline is really in lecithin?
PC may be roughly20–25% of raw soy lecithin and contains roughly13% choline by mass. Actual composition varies; these estimates cannot replace a product assay.
Is sunflower better than soy?
The practical distinction is source and allergy preference; a clinical efficacy advantage is not established.
Does TMAO prove lecithin damages the heart?
No. The dossier includes mechanistic and observational evidence, which cannot establish that an individual lecithin supplement causes cardiovascular events.
What should I do for recurrent plugged ducts?
Seek lactation/medical assessment. Lecithin use is based on expert practice, and fever or progressive breast pain should not be managed by increasing supplements alone.
Stack interactions
- Caution Other choline donors and racetam stacks [CAUTION // CLINICAL_CONTEXT]
Count actual choline across alpha-GPC, citicoline and lecithin. Headache prevention with racetams is not established lecithin efficacy. - Caution Anticoagulants / cardiovascular disease [CAUTION // CLINICAL_CONTEXT]
Human TMAO research supports a metabolic and observational signal, not a proven clinical interaction with warfarin or DOACs. Avoid turning association into a blanket contraindication.
PMID 23614584 PMID 27281307 - Caution Liposomal nutrient carriers [CAUTION // CLINICAL_CONTEXT]
PC in vitamin C, glutathione or other carriers contributes phospholipid exposure. A carrier benefit for another ingredient does not establish a therapeutic PC dose. - Caution Mood disorders / psychiatric treatment [CAUTION // CLINICAL_CONTEXT]
Choline-related low mood is a historical and consumer concern with uncertain lecithin-specific clinical evidence. Discuss worsening mood with the treating clinician rather than escalating the stack.
Red flags: interactions and who should avoid it
Interactions
Count choline supplied by other choline products and phospholipid carriers. TMAO-related anticoagulant concerns are theoretical, not demonstrated warfarin/DOAC interactions. Mood worsening is a low-certainty concern in susceptible people.
Avoid or ask a doctor first if
Soy allergy requires ingredient review because residual IgE-binding proteins can remain. Pregnancy/lactation nutritional needs and recurrent breast symptoms require individual clinical guidance. Stop for persistent GI upset, low blood pressure or mood deterioration.
